DRAGSTRIP

The music of Dragstrip has been described variously as “New Zealand horror stories” and “beat-poetry”. Dragstrip himself says, “I enjoy creating images that are at once familiar and discomforting”. This can be seen in the song ‘the Eugenicist’ in which Dragstrip juxtaposes a young couple riding their bicycles through the Christchurch springtime with a miscarriage and a misanthrope. Dragstrip released his debut ep, "the Holy Loner and the Crystal Drifter", in March. He say's of the record that it is "5 slices of the best 'Hoodoo Folk' this side of anywhere". Of the dense, multi-layered production he say's "If I knew when I started the thing what I know now, I don't think I would have been quite so ambitious, that said though, I wouldn't go back and change a thing". The EP is available to purchase below, as are two exclusive tracks recorded for, and only available on, KSW13 & KSW15.

“honest, angsty, and often quite funny beat-poetry styled vocals over just the bare bones of stop-start rhythmic guitar”. (Chris Andrews-thebigcity.co.nz)
"The opening act, a soloist, by the name of Dragstrip, was quite straining. Almost putting me off completely. He spoke over rambling guitar in an angst-ridden tone trying to create a storyteller style. It just didn’t work."(from francesrosey.googlehax.com).
"dragstrip were brash and to the point - and thoroughly entertaining"
A Low Hum.
Dragstrip, Otis Mace, Greg Franco and Andrew Maitai at the Mussell Inn, Takaka on their recent New Zealand tour. Besides Takaka, they also played other exotic locations like Picton, Nelson, Greymouth, Queenstown, Port Chalmers, Moeraki and Lyttleton.

Throwing together three very different songwriters on a national tour was an interesting exercise. Each artist played a solo set and would join together at the end for a grand finale which culminated into a tour band christened "The Cogs" playing an amazing mix of styles. A little recording was done at the end of the tour. So you can expect a souvenoir tour single, due out later in the year.
