Dirty rock n’ roll, that’s what its all about. Low slung
guitars, an 80’s hair metal Kramer wielding bassist and a drummer who
insists on beating the crap out of everything he touches. Music that’s
devoid of filler. Sometime in 2001, Auckland New Zealand, a bad ass bassline
was played over the telephone between the founding members of the feds
that resulted in the song ‘riding low’ and the birth of the Feds.
This very first song now appears on a compilation soon to be released
in Europe by 8 Records from Italy. The band recently released a
3 song EP that received critical acclaim from StonerRock.Com
and other independent record labels and publications from around the world.
Formed with the intention of playing maximum rock n’ roll, the Feds
music can be described as groove laden and punchy. As one reviewer put
“Monster Magnet enthusiasm with a grainy KISS outlook”.
Throw in the sleaziness of Kyuss, the dynamics of Tool and
the melody sensibilities of Kings X and you’ve got music that’s
tighter than Jane Fonda’s butt yet groovy and memorable. The Feds
have spent the last year perfecting their material and are currently in
their studio working on their first full-length album due for release
sometime in July 2003. If the reviews
are anything to go by, the album will be a slammin’ balls-to-the-wall
rock n’ roll affair.............Rawk On!

THE SOUND MONITOR: Following on from the success of their unmastered demo of 2003, New Zealand's The Feds are striking another rock blow. This here EP houses 2 of the tracks found on the aforementioned demo, along with 2 fresh out of the oven tunes that'll get you shakin' that boogie voluntarily or no. Opening with the steady groove of 'Happiness is a Big Chopper' the four-piece ease the listener into what is essentially a rock-feast. The title-track kicks off next and as on the demo, is the shining star this time around also. Classic Swedish Stoner riffs combine with a dirty biker-attitude and a catchy-as-all-hell chorus of "Ridin' lo, ridin' hard" placing you on the backseat of the two-wheeler of your choice. Hey, I've never ridden a motorbike in my life, but after hearing this EP I even feel like a biker! 'Fat Wreck' comes in at number 3 and has nothing at all to do with the record label, and everything to do with some poor soul left on the side of the road. Again, the groove settles in nicely care of the precisely loose rhythm section, and some keen rimshots. The band close things off with another of the demo tracks, 'Full Circle'. This is a perfect closing track with it's groove thumping at you ala Roadsaw or Alabama Thunderpussy, with some harmony thrown in for added spice. Very nice indeed. by Warren Wheeler
