Articles and Reviews

GROOVE GUIDE ISSUE 151 DEC 2006: INFINITE FLYING KICK - Checkmate. Auckland five-piece Infinite Flying Kick cite their influences as ranging from J.S. Bach to Japanese rock, to Radiohead and Weezer. With an eclectic range of influencesit's hard to imagine what their sound might be. Well imagine away, because it's also hard to describe. With their debut EP Checkmate they move through run of the mill sounding rock, intense epic rock and cheeky pinacolada tinged pop rock. For a five track EP, they really seem to have shown their range. 'Mr Sad Robot' has melodies that would sit comfortably on Weezer's Pinkerton, while 'Black Circus' is a dark Muse-esque waltz, and 'Toaster' froths frantically with a surf rock rhythm section. If this EP ia anything to go by, Infinite Flying Kick will be one to keep an eye on. They can do it all. It'll be interesting to hear what they can do with a full length album, and if one style will dominate the rest. Tessa Prebble

Infinite Flying Kick are a recent signing to Powertool records and have gained recognition as one of he hardest-working live acts currently on the Auckland live circuit. Upcoming gigs include Sat Sep 2 at the Masonic, Friday Sep 22 at Hysteria, and Friday Sep 29 at Sohl bar in Hamilton, with the Shrugs and Dynamo Go. With an E.P release just around the corner, Greasy Watts caught up with four of the 5 members of I.F.K. to talk about what's in store, and their reaction to playing the last Indie Club Show at Grand Circle, St James. (under photo) IFK somewhere on the Grand Circle stairwell..with Powertool Records and Indie Club boss Andrew Maitai. (L-R, Christina, Robin, Andrew Maitai, Willis, Jeff, Charles)

1) So you guys played the last Indie Club at the St James? What was that like?

Robin: it was really fun and a good turn out. bit sad that its the last one but Andrew's got some more plans for indie club so lets wait and see. Charles: It felt wonderful. Indie Club was the first venue we ever started to play in as a 5-piece, I love the venue's decoration , when we played that last gig in Grand Circle it gave me lots of memories from it. Jeff: Yea we did, including us there were 5 great acts so yeah it was a great night of music

2) I know you've played the Indie club quite a few times. What are some of the memories? R: It's always been fun and me personally think one of our best gigs happened there. And it's a good chance for us to get heard and get some live playing experience C: I still remember the first time we played at Indie club- since it was the first time, there were many of our friends who showed up and supported us. I remember I was standing on the stage just like a tree, too nervous and conservative to move around.... Man it looked stupid on the video even now. Sometimes I even smiled or laughed during sad touching songs (lost in space/merry go round). Haha it was highly inappropriate. J: We owe a bit to Andrew & Indie Club as it was the first place we played at and it gave us many more opportunities and that's also where we met Lee who is managing us now.

3) What do you think of the Indie Club concept? $10 entry with a free cd R: pretty awesome because not only the audience are entertained with great live music they also have something from indie club to listen to when they're back home. C: I personally like the idea, however there are friends of mine who has been saying they rather have a cheaper door sale without CDs. J: I think it's awesome as most places have a door charge of $10 anyway but you can get a free CD here.

4) Ok, well I hear you guys will have your own release coming out soon! Can you tell me about it? What can we expect? R: Yeah we are planning a 6 song EP that's due out hopefully in October. I always feel live is the best way to experience IFK so we will try our best to capture the live feel and dynamics. It's quite hard but fun too. C: Yes it'll be under Powertool records, I'm excited about it myself too. Its gonna be an EP style consisting of 6 tunes, which we have played several times at the gigs, so if you came to our gigs before you should be very familiar with it :) J: Yea it's going to be an EP and its scheduled release is in October sometime. That's all I'll tell you now.

5) Personally, I can't wait for it to come out. Will you be doing shows to support it? R: Yeah definitely and maybe a tour as well. C: Yeah hopefully we can finish by the end of sepember and we can sell it during our Auckland Art Gallary Gig, (every saturday in october 3pm) J: Yeah we will be doing weekly shows at the Auckland Art Gallery in October to support it

6) What about other shows you have coming up? R: We're gonna play in HK yeah! (If we win this year's battle of bands) and our first heat is next Thursday at Lincoln Green. I think there are few more as well just go to http://www.myspace.com/infiniteflyingkick and u will see all the details of gigs coming up. C: We are getting busier every now and then, lots of gigs coming up in fact, even gonna have one in Hamilton! All the gig details, including date and even venue location are on our website. Feel free to check it out at www.infiniteflyingkick.com

7) Who are your current fave local bands, best band played with, and bands you hope to play with? R: Datsuns Pluto Dimmers are my fav. Quick and the Dead and Fideleo are pretty awesome. Any gig we could open for those in my fav band list would be really great C: I' ll go for Pluto as my favourite local band. There are quite a few bands that I've enjoyed to play with, such as The Quick and the Dead, Phony Bone, and Night Walker's Lounge. I hope one day we'll be able to play with...SHIHAD!

8)Where do you see the band going from here? say in a years' time? R: Big day out '08! C: yeah we are currently still gain some experiences as fast as we can, and hope we could be on the band list of 2008 Big Day Out. J: It's hard to say eh, everything is happening pretty fast right now.

9) And what do you guys like doing when you're not in a band situation? What's your fave cafe/ restaurant/record shop/ supermarket, for example? R: I like perfecting my bruce lee impression and also doodling/sketching/drawing. Currently the Chinese chess champion of first IFK tournament. C: Normally we gather in my house when we have meeting or stuff. But most of the times after we finish we'll just stay there and play chinese chess or cards ~! We don't really have a favourite restrauant to go in fact.....Do we? (Willis: Charles loved Burger King at one stage in his life). J: We were all friends to begin with before the band stated so we enjoy just hanging out like normal friends

10) well guys, the big guy in the corner just told me my time is about up. Any final scraps of advice for any emerging bands, or anyone at all? R: Emerging bands? That's us hopefully. Advice? Doctor Phil is probably the one to look for. C: you have to try it, actually do it first and then see how it goes. Never be afraid to try new things and never give up. That's what I think if you're to become a success. J: Tell them 'it's not the strongest who wins, it's winning that makes you the strongest" (W: what the heck is he on about?)
