Krapp Records are our friends in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, USA. I like their attitude and philosophy about music. Below is article about their philosophy and history of Krapp Records written by Ebeneezer Krapp himself that appeared in the February 2005 issue of Drill. I encourage you to check out their website and bands on their roster. Drop them a line, listen to their MP3's and tell your friends. The world is a small place, so lets be friends with people that care. |
My name is Ebeneezer Krapp, founder and president of Krapp Records. My friends have always insisted that I am the Hugh Hefner of Indie Rock! Where Hef specializes in finding and promoting young, beautiful women; I specialize in finding and promoting Indie bands. After many years of being in and around phenomenal Indie bands and sick to exhaustion of hearing the latest corporate-poopy boy-band on the radio and MTV, I decided to form Krapp Records in 2002 Krapp Records is located in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, USA. Wisconsin is basically known for three things - beer (Go Leinenkugels!), cheese, and the Green Bay Packers football team. In addition, Eau Claire is only a stone's throw away from Minneapolis, MN - the city that bore such great bands as the Replacements, Husker Du and Soul Asylum (BEFORE Grave Dancer's Union that is). Krapp Records first release was in the summer of 2002 with the Sit Down and Rock compilation which featured many artists such as Noelsterdamus & the Naysayers, Third Wave Project, and Mount all of whom have gone on to become mainstays on the Krapp roster. We then were lucky enough to release veteran pop-punk band, Voodoo Love Mint's Pet My Pussy EP. I personally designed the album cover and the advertisement, which featured a black cat named Fluffy. The publication who decided to run the ad got a lot of criticism for doing so by the local cultural elitists (yet, when the Vagina Monologues came to town they were like, "Oh what wonderful art" about a bunch of women standing around talking about their frickin beavers for two hours), but the album was still a success! Anyway, later that year Krapp began our targeted "Turd 'n a Diaper campaign" which was where we terrorized record and production companies by sending our CDs packaged in a diaper filled with chocolate covered raisins. Ummm. it was good! We were immediately contacted by Troma Entertainment (famous for the Toxic Avenger movies and cartoon - www. Troma.com) who had gotten a hold of one of our tasty packages and asked if they could use Mount's song Mount to be featured in their major straight to video film, Doggie Tails, Volume 1: Lucky's First Sleep Over. Krapp Records received some local attention on this accomplishment when the nearby Chippewa Falls, WI Public Library decided to add Doggie Tails to their collection. (If you've ever seen the movie Titanic starring Leonardo DiCraprio you'd know that Chippewa Falls is the town where the character he plays is from. You'd also know that Celine Dion did the theme song, but I'm guessing that you DON"T own the soundtrack because if you did, I doubt you'd be reading Drill.unless of course, maybe you got it as a gift. Hmmm.). In early 2003, we released out second compilation, Take the Plunge which featured songs from some of the best rock bands in Wisconsin and Minnesota such as Monday Morning Fog, by the Catastrophe of Oshkosh, WI. It was a very solid comp that got a lot of play on WQOW-TV18 (even though I nor Krapp Records didn't get a single mention because the anchor was too embarrassed to say, "Krapp" on TV). By this time I was weary and broke (diapers cost a LOT of money) so I enlisted an old friend, Philthy McNasty. Philthy had enjoyed a brief moment in the sun when he played in a punk-skiffle band called Squid in the early nineties; and after years in the pretzel industry was ready to get back into the music scene. Therefore, Philthy organized and financed the third Krapp Records compilation, Philthy's Choice that featured bands from all over the U.S. Then, in that same year something magical happened. . I made the acquaintance of Kenny Nielsen from the band Sovso (let it be said that those Danes are not only good-looking, but smart and talented as well). Kenny, Strapped On Records, and Krapp Records combined forces to release the Husker Du - 20th Anniversary International Tribute to Zen Arcade which received attention all over the world! Krapp Records latest release is Next One will Cost You that features my favorite Krapp alumni, thus far, and their songs. I'm proud to say that this compilation recently received a good review in The Big Takeover magazine (a.k.a. the bible of Indie music) and you can get a FREE copy by contacting me at Ebeneezer@krapprecords.com. I also want to invite you to our website www.krapprecords.com where you can download FREE music by all the artists I've written about and then some. Why all the FREE stuff??? This is my mission.my ministry - to bring you excellent music because the tone-deaf dragon, known as corporate rock, has been slain. Rock on! E
P.S. If you're ever in Eau Claire, I'd be happy to have you buy me a beer.
