Originally from Rome, Italy, Elisa Di Napoli has been composing and performing music in Ireland, Europe and New Zealand. Her work spans a variety of projects and genre including rock, dance, folk and ambient music. Following completion of her solo concept album "La Spirale", in 2005 Elisa founded The Moon Whispers, a four piece band which has gigged extensively in Wellington, with tours to Christchurch and Auckland. The band's elaborate, melodic music has been described as folk, goth and psychedelic rock, but regardless of what you want to call them, their impressive orchestration and theatrical live sets have continued to grown and evolve. In 2006 The Moon Whispers released their debut self-titled EP followed by "Dance Your Pain Away", a collaborative dance project under The Moon Whispers moniker with contributions from Wellington dance artists Amy Davidson and the Upbeats, and Dublin-based electro composer Francis Heery. The Moon Whispers has also performed as a two-piece acoustic set with Cellist Jane Pierard at venues such as Mighty Mighty , Bar Bodega, Happy Bar, Valve Bar ,San Francisco Bath House, and the Wellington Folk Festival. Currently she is set to explore new musical forms, and is working on an acoustic album for cello flute guitar violin and vocals as well as a band album for drums, bass, flute, guitar, cello and vocals as well as a solo album of ambient and experimental electro-acoustic compositions all of which will be released in February 2009. Articles & Reviews DANCE YOUR PAIN AWAY by THE MOON WHISPERS by THE NZ MUSICIAN: Wow! First impressions and every listen thereafter. This is magical stuff indeed. The Moon Whispers is the alter ego of Wellington resident Elisa Di Napoli, and on occasion a duo or 4 piece band. Elisa's voice is stunning and beautifully layered, and her song writing and musical ideas are very appealing. Whilst you might be tempted to slot her into the ethereal, folky, ambient, gothic zone, on this release Elisa demonstrates broader talents with some great collaborations with varied composers including Wellington's Amy Davidson, Francis Heery (Ireland) and The Upbeats (a brilliant Kosheen-style drum and bass track), as well as her own band. The production is excellent, particularly the bass and vocal treatments (shades of Dead Can Dance come to the fore). Ambient, trance and dance lovers will be entranced. Imagine a phatted-up Loreena McKennit crossed with Jordan Reyne and you're starting the picture. "Atmospheric" doesn't even begin to describe the myriad of ambiences and emotions contained in this beautiful album. Not just entrancing, it's also made for dancing. Title track is house-style and title says it all. Mastered at Matrix Studios in Wellington and sounding great. Ania Glowacz , NZ Musician Dec 2007 |
