PT072: JETTY - Soundtrack for Modern Heartbreak (CD Album) Powertool Records

This band made up of friends Robin Sharma,Martyn Sadler, Andrew Barsby and Gary Dalhousie Having a love of indie music, experimenting, jamming loud and going out they soon discovered the chemistry behind their first album called Soundtrack for Modern Heartbreak. Jetty played during 96, 97 and 98. Sharma went off shore to teach for a couple of years and the band went into hiatus. Originally self released in '99, Powertool Records have decided to re-release this gem of an album that should be in every indie music fans collection. Heavily influenced by The Flying Nun Stable, GbV, Pavement, Sebadoh, Sonic Youth, The Fall, Joy Division, The Velvets, Television (and The Crown Jukebox!) And together with the Lyrics of Sharma and the music of the band , came a unique indie pop folk sound that would blow audiences away and inspire the band to record a phenomenal debut.

…The songs …1.Cross my heart, our little tribute to Di 2.feather song, gifted by Aaron Sharma (who also guest vocals) based on his research of planting feathers to give hope in desperate times. 3.It started with a kiss, like any good pop song there has to be a little bit of romance.4.Purakanui, Where Marty lives…some of my history of Maori wars may be incorrect but the sentiment was there.5.Shiny Radio promo for Radio one 6.Sonick yooth…we like that band 7.Spaceman…and spaceman 3 8.bows n flows a mix of love gone wrong and taking drugs. 10.Jesus speeds…An old Jefferson song about Jamie speeding around Dunedin.11.Nothing ever works…well its true some times12.Leadsong..This is the lead song this is the last one…seemed appropriate.

Not since the Double Happys has New Zealand rock had such an animated bundle of squawking energy as Jetty. ***** Southland Times

REVIEWS & ARTICLES
OTAGO DAILY TIMES: Soundtrack for Modern Heartbreak, Jetty. 12 tracks, 34mins 46sec. Reviewed by Darryl Baser. Local lads Jetty have recorded a stunning debut CD, recorded by Jetty and Richard Baker at Tailgater Studios, utilising some of Steven Kilroy's Fish St gear. Jetty is Robin Sharma, Gary Dalhousie, Andrew Barsby and Martin Saddler. They have recorded a good album, full of student radio hits from the past few years, including Jesus Speeds, White Boys On Punk and their most recent pop classic Purakunui. With 12 songs in all, Jetty's CD is hopefully the first of many. Top effort. Rating *****
THE SOUTHLAND TIMES: Soundtrack for Modern Heartbreak, Jetty. Reviewer Ian Henderson. The first time I chanced upon Jetty in Dunedin's Arc Cafe a year ago, I was impressed at the distinctive sound crafted from a melting pot of influences. It seemed as if everything from Joy Division, Velvet Underground, Pavement and 1980's Dunedin bands had been filtered through a glass or three of Speight's and reconstructed as unfashionably melodic punk-folk (their description of their style). Not since the Double Happys has New Zealand rock had such an animated bundle of squawking energy as Jetty frontman Robin Sharma. Doesn't matter what planet he's in a shaky orbit around, the boy's got attitude and it's hard not to love the cranky brilliance of his lyrics and the way he delivers them. Jetty and Sharma are equally at home poking fun at pop fashion in Sonick Yooth, dropping references to Pavement in the gnarly White Boys On Punk and mixing health, history and haka on Purakanui. But wait, there's more. It ,akes Jetty sense to end your debut album with a sublime five-minute classic called Leadsong. But here's hoping it is the lead song to much more because there's a ragged glory in these Te Wai Pounamu punk-folk classics *****
